Advanced Technology ○ Expert Techniques ○ Professional Team
At Conscan, we are concrete scanning and investigation specialists. Our team provides comprehensive corrosion inspection services to identify and assess the potential damage caused by steel rebar corrosion in concrete structures.
Our experienced operators use investigative methods including visual assessment, laboratory analysis, and specialised scanning techniques to detect areas of active corrosion before they become more significant issues, such as concrete cancer.
Corrosion begins to affect a concrete structure’s integrity when the products of corrosion (i.e. rust) occupy a greater overall volume than the original reinforcing steel. This expansion then creates tensile stresses in the concrete that causes it to stain, crack, and spall.
Using the recorded voltage and the applied current, the low-frequency impedance response of rebar in concrete can be extracted, which can be used to determine the state of corrosion in reinforced concrete structures.
We have the capability to provide detailed reports that accurately document the location and rate of corrosion. We can also recommend appropriate concrete repair solutions to preserve the safety and durability of the structure.
WHAT IS CONCRETE SPALLING?
Concrete spalling is a structural problem that is caused by moisture infiltration. Concrete buildings rely on an internal framework of steel bars or mesh to ensure their structural integrity. However, this embedded steel reinforcement is vulnerable to corrosion when exposed to air or water.
Moisture can enter reinforced concrete structures through small cracks or joints in the concrete or by seeping into the foundation through groundwater. As the steel corrodes, it breaks down and expands which then causes the surrounding concrete to deteriorate. This is known as concrete spalling.
Corrosion cracks in concrete can be dangerous as the weakened concrete will eventually break away from the structure, leading to extensive and costly property damage and even personal injury. This spread and worsening of concrete spalling is known as concrete cancer.
Signs of Concrete Cancer:
- Flaking, crumbling, spalling, expanding concrete
- Rust stains leaking out of the concrete surface
- Bubbling, blistering, plating of concrete render
- Leaks in overhead concrete surfaces
- Rusting and exposed reinforcement pushing concrete so that it cracks and becomes loose
CONCRETE CORROSION DETECTION
Concrete spalling is a prevalent issue that affects many reinforced concrete structures. Concrete corrosion inspections are performed when you need to assess the condition of the embedded reinforcing steel and its susceptibility to the corrosion process.
At Conscan, our expert technicians use a range of investigative methods to ensure accuracy and safety. First, we assess the condition of the concrete surface by taking photos and examining it closely for signs of wear or decay. Our team also uses ground penetrating radar to examine the internal structure. Specialised probes and other tools can then identify the presence of corroding agents such as chlorides or sulphates and measure concrete strength.
After all tests have been completed, we provide the findings in a detailed report. By leveraging technology with visual observations, our professional team is able to detect small problems with the corrosion of steel in concrete before they become major hazards.
What we offer:
- Detection of corrosion in steel reinforcement
- Measurement of rebar corrosion rate
- Evaluation of corrosion potential of steel rebar
- Measurement of in-situ electrical resistivity
- Assessment of concrete durability
