Comprehensive Testing ○ Attention-To-Detail ○ Experienced Team

Concrete testing is an essential process for construction projects to ensure concrete meets the required standards and design specifications. This detailed assessment can be performed either in the field or a laboratory to determine the strength and stability of the structural elements.

Cylindrical concrete specimens are prepared from core samples taken from the existing structure and tested in our NATA approved facility. High-quality core drilling systems are used to take accurate core samples, allowing our specialist technicians to assess the properties such as compressive strength and chemical properties.

Non-destructive testing involves the evaluation of existing structures without causing damage, using advanced scanning equipment to gain a better understanding of key structural elements. Through these core sampling and concrete testing technologies, it is possible to locate any damage or distress in the concrete and make the necessary repairs before it causes further problems or impacts safety.

If you have a concern with the integrity of your concrete structure, get in touch with the concrete scanning and investigation specialists at Conscan. Our experienced technicians can assist with evaluating your structure and providing full reports on our findings and recommendations.

OUR METHODS

CONCRETE CORE SAMPLING

Core sample testing involves drilling a cylindrical hole into the concrete and extracting a core sample for testing. Concrete core tests are generally performed to assess whether suspect concrete in a new structure complies with strength-based acceptance criteria. Core sampling is also critically used to determine in-place concrete strengths in an existing structure for the evaluation of structural capacity.

  • Carbonation levels and pH levels in the concrete
  • Depth of carbonation advancement (if present)
  • Micro-fractures and paste/aggregate bond
  • Chloride ion content analysis
  • Estimated water-cement ratio at construction
  • Air-entrainment content
  • Compressive strength and concrete density
  • Chemical attack on the concrete and depth of advancement (if any industrial or atmospheric gases are present) Resistivity

COMPRESSION TESTING

Compressive strength is the ability of a certain construction material or structure to bear a load of significant weight on its surface without any fracture, warp or deflection. Our compression testing involves applying a load to a cylindrical or cubic sample of concrete until it fails. These tests are designed to demonstrate the greatest strength that your concrete can provide in optimal conditions, measuring its strength and flexural capacity in a hardened state.

CARBONATION TESTING

Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide from the air reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete. The depth of carbonation is a measure of the age of the concrete and the amount of exposure it has had. By spraying the concrete with dye, carbonation testing can determine where concrete has become carbonated and identify concrete that is at risk of failure due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement.

CHLORIDE CONTENT TESTING

Chloride content testing involves measuring the amount of chloride ions in the concrete sample. Chloride ions can cause corrosion of the steel reinforcement in concrete, so it is important to establish the presence and depth of any chloride content within the hardened concrete. Chloride content testing is often used to test concrete in marine environments where it has been exposed to saltwater. These tests can be conducted on-site so our team can provide a prompt report of any findings.

SULPHATE CONTENT TESTING

Testing concrete to establish the levels and extent of any sulphate content can help determine the reason for concrete expansion or cracking. This method uses an acidified solution of barium chloride, diluted hydrochloric acid and sulphates to detect the existence of any sulphate content in the concrete. Once a sulphate chemical breakdown has been identified, our team can provide you with a list of recommendations to help you restore the strength and cohesion of your concrete structure.
